Commemorative Medal War 1940-1945

The large model of the Commemorative Medal of the War 1940–1945 is an official Belgian award, granted to military personnel and civilians who contributed to the struggle or the Belgian Resistance during the Second World War. This large model symbolises national recognition of courage, endurance and sacrifice during the occupation from 1940 to 1945.

The round medal, struck in bronze-coloured metal, features on its obverse a large letter V, symbolising victory, flanked by the years “1940” and “1945”. Above the V is the head of a roaring Belgian lion, emblem of strength and resilience.

The large model of the Commemorative Medal of the War 1940–1945 is worn on a yellow moiré ribbon bordered on each side by a broad black stripe with a thin white stripe, representing national unity and victory.
