Commemorative Medal for Missions or Operations regarding the Operational Defense of the Territory

decoration awarded to military personnel and Defence staff who have taken part in missions or operations on national territory.

On 19 January 2018, an agreement was reached within the military negotiation committee on the regulatory provisions for the award of this commemorative medal. It is intended for service members who participated in missions such as Operation Vigilant Guardian and Operation Spring Guardian.

Any service member who has taken part in such a mission for at least 30 days may be awarded this medal.

The medal is struck in bronze-coloured metal and has a round shape. The obverse shows the Belgian coat of arms with the crowned lion, surrounded by the inscription: “DOMESTIC MISSIONS OR OPERATIONS – BINNENLANDSE OPDRACHTEN OF OPERATIES”.

The decoration is suspended from a yellow moiré ribbon with a central red stripe and an adjacent black stripe, symbolising the national colours. This large model is the official version worn on the uniform at ceremonial occasions.
