Medal Mérite Sportif 1939 - gold

The large model of the Gold Medal of Sporting Merit is struck in gilt bronze and depicts on the obverse two athletes with bare upper body shaking hands, with the word SPORT below.

The Gold Medal of Sporting Merit is the highest grade of this rare Belgian sports award, instituted in 1939. It is awarded to athletes who have achieved outstanding performances, such as winning an Olympic gold medal, obtaining a world title, or setting a world record. Sports officials with at least twenty years of service may also qualify. The medal is awarded no more than ten times per year, making it an extremely prestigious honor.

The large model is worn on a green moiré ribbon with a central gold stripe. Within the three existing grades – gold, silver, and bronze – this gold version represents the highest distinction.
