Medal for Civil Invalid of the War 1940-1945

The Civilian Invalid of War Decoration 1940–1945 is a Belgian award created to honour civilians who became disabled as a result of wartime actions during the Second World War. The decoration represents both the personal suffering endured and the national recognition for such sacrifices.

The round medal is struck in silver-coloured metal and depicts on the obverse a stylised figure of a disabled civilian wearing a hat, whose body appears to fragment – a poignant metaphor for physical and moral pain. To the left are three swords, symbols of the violence of war, while above is a Belgian royal crown with crossed sabres. At the bottom is the date “1940–1945”.

The large model of the Civilian Invalid of War Decoration 1940–1945 is suspended from a purple moiré ribbon, featuring the Belgian tricolour (black-yellow-red) at the centre, flanked by white stripes.
