Commemorative medal 1914 -1918

The Commemorative Medal 1914–1918 is an official Belgian award instituted to recognise all military personnel and civilians who served in the Belgian armed forces or distinguished themselves during the occupation in the First World War. The medal honours their service, sacrifice and contribution to Belgium’s war effort.

The medal is struck in bronze-coloured metal and has a distinctive triangular shape with a rounded lower edge. The obverse shows the profile of a Belgian soldier wearing an Adrian helmet, surrounded by laurel branches. The years “1914” and “1918” are engraved on either side of the portrait.

The large model of the Commemorative Medal 1914–1918 is worn on a yellow moiré ribbon with a central black stripe and red edges, reflecting the national colours of Belgium.
