Medal UN Somalia

The UN Medal “Somalia” (large model) is an international award established by the United Nations (UN) for military personnel and certain civilians who took part in UN operations in Somalia during the 1990s. These missions, including UNOSOM I, UNOSOM II and UNITAF, aimed to secure humanitarian relief, restore peace, and provide security in a period of severe instability and conflict.

The medal is a round bronze decoration. On the obverse is the emblem of the United Nations: a world map in azimuthal projection, surrounded by two olive branches symbolising peace. The inscription “UN” appears in relief above.

The medal is suspended from a moiré ribbon of sand colour, featuring a light blue vertical central stripe (the UN colour), flanked by dark green stripes. The sand represents the Somali landscape, the blue the presence of the UN, and the green the hope for stability and peace.

The large model is worn on the uniform during official ceremonies, UN commemorations and military events.
