The Order of the Oak Crown (Ordre de la Couronne de Chêne) is one of the principal national orders of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Instituted in 1841 by Grand Duke William II, it is an important distinction awarded for merits rendered in service to the state, the monarchy, and society. The order is conferred for outstanding achievements in a wide range of fields, including public administration, defence, culture, science, the economy, and community life. Both Luxembourg citizens and foreign recipients may be decorated with the Order of the Oak Crown. The Order of the Oak Crown comprises several grades, each with its own insignia, ribbon, and manner of wear. The symbolism of the oak refers to steadfastness, loyalty, and strength — values that are central to the Luxembourg state.
