Grand Cross Order of the African Star

This Grand Cross of the Order of the African Star (Ordre de l’Étoile Africaine) is a prestigious decoration from the former Belgian Congo, established by King Leopold II. It represents one of the highest grades of this colonial order, awarded for exceptional services rendered in Africa.

The insignia features an elaborate eight-pointed star with alternating silver and gilt rays. Superimposed is a white-enamelled Maltese cross with a blue border, set upon a golden radiant background and surrounded by a green laurel wreath. At the centre appears a gold five-pointed star on blue enamel, encircled by a ring bearing the motto “TRAVAIL ET PROGRÈS”. Above the badge is the royal monogram surmounted by a crown, characteristic of the order.

The refined enamel work, gilded details and symbolic elements make this decoration a striking and historically significant insignia within the Belgian and colonial honours system.
